[Life] USPS Impossible FAIL

Posted by reudaly on September 15, 2011 in Life |

Today I was part of the “impossible” at the United States Post Office. That’s not necessarily a Good Thing – and because the stress of the Week before FenCon isn’t enough… it happened today. The result is a change in PO Box address – and the invalidation of every single one of my new business cards…

Background: when Jimmy and I got married, we got a PO Box for all our important mail because our house has a mailbox on the street that isn’t secure. We’ve used this PO Box since the end of June 2007 (we set it up a couple of weeks before the wedding). We had issues from the beginning with billing either going astray or having computer issues…

TODAY: Fastforward. We realized we hadn’t received a piece of mail in about 4 mailing days – maybe 5. I go to the post office today because one of those missing pieces of mail is a paycheck for me. We also realize we haven’t seen a bill in a while.

I open our mailbox – there’s a package addressed to us and an envelope NOT addressed to us. So I go talk to our most awesome Post Office Guy, Todd. He has me call in a supervisor (who is most assuredly NOT awesome) who goes away, does something, and comes back and tells me that our box was closed out in JUNE OF 2008 and rented to someone else! WTF… Jimmy and I have received mail – yes, addressed to us – in that mailbox until last Thursday – 9/8/11. Our keys worked through TODAY because I got the package out of it. The person on the envelope WAS the other person who rented the box.

Apparently we have been “sharing” a mailbox with someone else FOR THREE YEARS!!! Something that is supposed to be “impossible”. Since someone else has rented our box – and either never, ever gotten mail there or come by, but paid the bill… or just picked out THEIR mail before we got there and never touched anything of ours. None of it makes sense. Neither does the fact there were more than two keys to the post office box.

So, I spent a good chunk of time filling out a new application for a post office box – and a change of address form.

If you have: PO BOX 202118
It’s now: PO BOX 200984
