[Pen/Pencil Review] The Monteverde Invincia Deluxe Carbon Fiber Fountain Pen – Fine Nib

Posted by reudaly on July 15, 2013 in Review, writing instruments |

Hello, Monday. Today’s pen blog features the Monteverde Invincia Deluxe Fountain Pen. This is a handsome devil that MY handsome devil of a husband brought me back from The Pen Place in Kansas City when he went for Spectrum Fantasy Art Live!

This pen is visually stunning and heavy. I’ve used a fountain pen as a murder weapon in a short story before – this could be that weapon. For its weight, it’s very well-balance with a braided, carbon fiber pattern. Mine is the black on black. Black stainless steel trim and black titanium coated flexible stainless steel nib. Personally, I really like the solid flow of the black on black. The other metal trims just seem to bright for the dark elegance of this pen.

The cap posts well, even though it wobbles. It’s like a Weeble. Wabbles but don’t fall down. It’s about 5.5” capped and about 6.5” posted, which gives it good length. Since the pen has a screw on cap, there are some ridges to dig in, but for the most part it’s really comfortable.

It came with an international cartridge and a converter. I went straight to the converter and picked a specialty ink – Scribal Work Shop’s Nessie Purple. It’s a dark purple that looks kinda black, but it’s rich and solid and Lucas Tucker is a friend of mine from Scarborough Renaissance Festival. He does fantastic work in ink and old school scribe stuff.

This is one of my “never out of my sight” pens. That means it’s not an “everyday” pen, though you could if you wanted to. It’s NOT cheap. It does NOT get lent, unless I’m standing RIGHT THERE. I think it will be yours as well.

Let’s see the numbers…

1. How does it work?1 – it works well. The flexible nib helps prevent skipped and blobs. The converter holds a decent amount of ink. The Scribe Work Shop ink flows well through it.
2. Grip and feel0.5 – the length is comfortable. But as I mentioned, it’s heavy and there are some ridges that can dig in. It’s not bad, and probably won’t affect many people, but there could be some quibbles.
3. Material1 This thing is amazing. The metal and resin designs make it smooth while heavy. The titanium coated stainless steel nib isn’t going to break or deform. The black coating may fade over time, but I haven’t seen any indication of it. And I love, love, love, the carbon fiber design.
4. Overall Design1 I do like the overall design for this pen – it’s gorgeous as well as functional. They do make it pretty well balance, so it feels good in the hand for the weight. And they do pay a lot of attention to detail.
5. Price Point0.05 – It’s priced for what it is – a higher end commercial fountain pen. This thing has a MSRP on Monteverde’s website of $135. Yeah, you can probably find it cheaper on line or on sale somewhere – Amazon has one for $108 but you pay for shipping, but it’s NOT a disposable ballpoint. This is a reward/gift/impress a client pen. And you pay for that.

That’s 4 bronze pencils out of 5.
