[Writer Post] Ding Dong the Day Job’s Done

Posted by reudaly on May 23, 2012 in Life, Writing |

Last week I talked about Gelatin Brain. I’m happy to say that mine is starting to de-congeal (it’s a word now). While Jimmy was hobnobbing with the artistically famous and talented, I finally managed to get some work done on the novel. And though progress stumbled a little bit with the work-week, I did manage to accomplish a few other words, take care of some business, and start feeling more “human” about it all again.

I was greatly excited to come home Monday to the pre-publication contributors copies of Pen World magazine. My essay looks GREAT on the last page of the magazine. Finding it is a bit trickier. In my area of DFW, I’ve found exactly ONE place that carries the magazine–the Barnes and Noble on the Parks Mall. Might have to go check to see if it’s out this weekend (ick a mall on a holiday weekend), but I think it doesn’t hit stands until at least next week.

Now, this is going to sound weird, but I did get (circumstantially) good news. The soul-sucking job that I’ve been doing that has given me Gelatin Brain ends today. They don’t need me any longer. I feel for my one teammate who remains who’ll have to pick up the slack, but I’ve not burned any bridges here–so if other (hopefully less soul-sucking) projects come along, maybe they’ll bring me back. I like the people and the company, it was just this…task…that drove me to ice cream.

For the rest of the week I plan on writing. I really do. It’s a holiday weekend, and after the last 3.5 weeks, I’m ready for it–as a writer. I’m getting back to what I “really” do. There are plot bunnies who would like to come out and play in the sun. I saw tweets from artists and art directors who think there should be more books published so they can do more art. And I say… I volunteer. PICK ME!!!!

So where my teammate has been trying very hard not to be bummed out that she’s going to be on her own, I’ve been trying my best not to do cartwheels between the cubicles (1–that’s not professional, and 2–I don’t do a pretty cartwheel, never have never will).

Tomorrow goes back to basic normal for me. I. Can’t. Wait. So…everyone out there… I’m available for Writer Adoption. Authors looking for co-writers? Look me up. Artists wanting someone to write about your artwork–whether it’s text to go with art or a story to be illustrated? Look me up. I’m also looking for an opportunity or two do social media for a small company or group to help build some further transferrable skills.

As this door is easing shut (hallelujah), I’m looking for the big bay window that’s about to swing wide on the future. This muddling along is old. It’s done. I’m ready to move on. So, OPPORTUNITY? I’m not waiting for you to knock, I’m comin’ to you…
