[Pen Review] The PaperMate InkJoy White Barrell/Red Ink – Some Holiday Joy(ish)

Posted by reudaly on December 12, 2011 in Review, writing instruments |

Since it’s Christmas, I thought I’d continue (sort of) the holiday theme with pens (sort of). This week I’m taking a look at the PaperMate InkJoy 700 RT 1.0mm ball point pen – silver and white body with red ink. And there would be your holiday connection.

The white body InkJoy retractable pen is pretty much the Silhouette Elite with slightly different markings to indicate it’s part of the InkJoy family. But the first question to ask and answer is “What’s InkJoy?”

According to PaperMate… InkJoy is a new inking system that mixes “optimized writing tips” with “ultra-low viscosity inks”. These pens are supposed to be smoother, require less pressure to write with and deliver a more consistent line.

Okay, that’s PaperMate’s claim. This is a ball point pen. I don’t expect MUCH from them. I really don’t. Partly because they tend to be inexpensive in all aspects, and partly because – well – they’re BALL POINT PENS. And the thing for me is my own proclivities when it comes to pens. I’m beyond annoyed that US pen makers and retailers have decided for me that bigger is better. “Medium” used to be 0.7mm – now it’s 1.0mm. I don’t know when that necessarily changed, but I don’t like it. I find I write bigger with a larger point on my pen, which means I end up getting less words on a page when I’m doing longhand – especially on unlined paper, like my current Moleskine notebook.

I do admit there is a good consistency to the ink line. The color is rich and bold. The shape of the body is comfortable and easy to use, and the retractable mechanism is solid. It is a well-built pen for a ball point. It has a good price point between $1-$2. I bought this one singly at Office Depot with reward points to test out.

If you’re a ball point pen person, this is a good pen to have in your arsenal. I found myself going back to it when I had an indecisive pen moment last week, which is unusual for me. I don’t normally gravitate to the ball points, but this one was easy to pick up.

I give it a 3.5 bronze pencils.
