[Spotlight Post] Dallas Fan Days

Posted by reudaly on October 12, 2012 in Conventions, Spotlight |

It’s spotlight day on ye olde blog, and I’m at a complete loss. Not overly surprising to some. It’s been a very transitionary couple of weeks. I’m gearing up for Fan Days in Irving, TX. I’m not exactly sure what to actually call it. It seems like they’re moving away from SCI FI EXPO and embracing Dallas Comic Con…I think I’ve seen it as “Dallas Comic Con Present…Fan Days”.

So maybe we’ll talk about Fan Days. This is a different kind of science fiction convention than what I normally talk about in my blogs. This isn’t a fan run, (generally) not-for-profit event. This is a “for profit” convention, which means there are media people (actors) and the like there and autographs are sold.

Now, I believe the Sci Fi Expo folk started out as fans and began as fan-run, so you can’t lump these guys into the Creation type of “for profit”, but when you get to be the size (and the caliber) of start that these guys are it’s been pushed up a notch.

I’m very excited to be part of the vendor’s room there this go around. I’ll be selling books to a new audience. It’s getting harder and harder to break into shows like this, because once people are in, they tend to stay. I’m not sure what to expect – this will be my biggest show of this type that I’ve done on my own (I’ve worked larger conventions for other people), but this all on me (and Jimmy – he’s not hanging me out to dry on this one). But I’m not overly concerned. I know a lot of the volunteer staff, and they’re really good people.

The other awesomely cool thing is the right to say that I’m working the same event as people like Bruce Campbell, Stan Lee, and Felicia Day. This will be the first time I’m in the same BUILDING as these people. I’ve never met them (though Jimmy did give one of my first chapbooks to Felicia Day – because I dedicated part of it to her), but that’s as close as I’ve gotten. I probably won’t see any of them this time because I understand they’re mostly in a different part of the building, but I DON’T CARE. I’m in the same building and there’s a remote possibility one of them might come through the room.

And, I’m thinking my good friend, Ed, might need a small stash of my newly personalized Sharpies…just in case someone needs one… Hmmm. Anyway, this is an exploding show with great talent. And, if the pictures are any indication, great people watching for costumes and stuff. So come on out and join us, won’t you? Next weekend – October 19-21. I’ll be the overwhelmed one in the Exhibitor’s Hall/Dealer’s Room, whatever it’s called…
