[Writer Post] It’s ROYALTY Season!!!!

Posted by reudaly on April 4, 2012 in Writing |

I love Spring. It’s a crazy, random happenstance kind of season. Despite the allergy attacks and the possibility of severe weather (if you saw the Dallas/Fort Worth area on the national news – me and mine are fine and so are my friends and family in the area), everything blooms and is green and pretty again. (It’s also the allergies that made me blank on things like…D’OH! It’s Wednesday…blog day!) And it’s ROYALTY season. In more ways than one.

Next week begins Scarborough Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie, Texas. Though Jimmy and I are no longer vendors for the amazing artist, Allen Williams – we still have many friends who are beginning the season as performers and vendors. They begin eight grueling weeks of working 7 days a week – 2 of which are outdoors in fickle Texas weather (really, we’re fine, tornadoes bounced over us) ending in heat that’s brutal for period gear. I wish them all the best. And hope to have something more to say about that very soon…

But ’tis also the season for book royalties. I love seeing royalties show up – mostly because I tend to forget about them. So it’s almost windfall money – and as my body of work grows, so does the amount – even with splits between multiple authors. And it’s what I love about Yard Dog Press – they pay their royalties on time, every time. It’s a real treat to work with them in that regard – and that Selina Rosen is a kick butt editor.

If you are deciding on which route to take with your own writing – traditional publishing vs. self-publishing, Large Press vs. Small Press, this is something to take into consideration. How is payment made and is it made on time? How are they to work with? Do they treat their writers well? The main problem with doing the research is that if someone is treated badly they talk about it – loudly and often. Heck, I’ve done it myself this week with a national fast food chain. But we ten d to be quiet on the good stuff. It’s hard to ferret out sometimes who does right by people.

Yard Dog Press may not be big, but they do right by people. If you want to see good work done by good people, go buy books from them – and more than mine. I have the honor and privilege to work with some amazing writers in this House. And frankly, I’d rather work with these kinds of people than those who promise the moon.
