[Spotlight Post] HAVE You Met Rachel Caine?

Posted by reudaly on November 9, 2012 in Books, Spotlight, What I'm Reading |

I realized last night as Jimmy and I plowed through the Hurst, TX Barnes & Noble to the Teen Paranormal section to get Bitter Blood that I hadn’t yet done a spotlight on one my favorite authors and – honestly – people, Rachel Caine. BAD!!! Bad, Rhonda!!!

If you haven’t read Rachel Caine yet, WHY NOT???? She’s talented, snarky (in a good way), and tells a darned fine story (that knows when to end). Rachel Caine is the writer we hold up when we see people reading Twilight. I always those readers – “Do you like those particular books? Or is it just vampires?” If it’s vampires, then I play a version of the “Have you met Ted? Game” – “HAAAAVEEE you read Rachel Caine?”

I love the Morganville series. I really do. It’s got the dark and the angst – without going overboard. It’s got vampires and monsters you love and love and love-to-hate. The fangirl in me that had a crush on Darth Vader squees all over the Mad Vampire Scientist, Myrnin (and not just because he wears Vorpal Bunny slippers). Even though Amelie is the Head Vampire Queen of the Universe – she’s still sympathetic in her cold-blooded ruthlessness. And though Good wins, there’s always gray areas – like, you know with life. Glass Houses is the first book. Bitter Blood is the latest. There will be two more books in the series and it’ll be done. I’m both happy and said – it’s bittersweet because we’re invested in the characters, and yet, we’ve all seen story lines that went on too long. Caine doesn’t do that. She ends her series in appropriate places.

The Revivalist series is one such series. It’s going to be a trilogy and then done, because that’s how much story there is to tell, according to Caine. But I will enjoy this ride. You wouldn’t expect to like a series about a woman who becomes a funeral director after being in the military, especially when she discovers a drug that brings people back to life. She ends up being a victim of this drug and these are now her adventures. There’s love, death, sexy billionaires, and a precocious dog – who was edited out of the ending of the first book and had me ambushing Caine to make sure the dog was all right. He is. You can’t kill off a dog. You really can’t.

So if you like quirky takes on vampires and zombies, seriously…Have you met Rachel Caine? Check her out. Her first big series (which has a spin off) are the Weather Wardens – that’s magic and weather and chaos, those are great too, but the Morganville and Revivalist are the ones that have me going out during release week and buying books…GULP… RETAIL!!!! That should tell you something. Check her out.
