[Spotlight Post] Gates McFadden, Gluten Free Recipes, & Theatre

Posted by reudaly on June 7, 2013 in Spotlight |

My day has been running about 12 hours behind today. It’s been that kind of day.
I realized last night that I hadn’t talked about Dallas Comic Con much. Mostly because of scheduling, and the fact I spent a lot of time baking. Yes, baking.

You see, apparently the fabulous woman, Kat, who works with Star Trek actors is also a friend of Yard Dog Press. She knows me. She was also mentioning to Robyn that no matter how many times she told people, the fact Gates McFadden is gluten free got lost. I, in my hospitality mode, piped up with “I have gluten free peanut butter maple cookies if she needs them.” And I don’t know if she NEEDED then, but she got them anyway (and a fresh batch, I came home and baked more).

I got to meet Gates briefly on Saturday about lunch time. She was off somewhere, Kat introduced me. She acknowledged me and the cookies before hurrying off – in a very gracious manner. I was able to chat with her a bit on Sunday (that’s my schmooze day traditionally at these shows). And she was even more lovely after having had more than three hours of sleep and gotten rid of her headach.

Gates McFadden is not only a lovely person. She embraces the Star Trek legacy by having her Dr. Crusher action figure have great adventures on Twitter. And, by the way, the more activity/followers she has on Twitter, the more likely her theater is to get grant money and stuff, so help out a good cause and see the continuing adventures of Dr. Crusher.

The Ensemble Studio Theater is Gates’s other job. She’s the Artistic Director. This is a theater that serves not only gluten free snacks in their theater, but they also have a playwright’s unit that is a writers group for play writing and staging. They even help playwrights get their plays into production. Which is way cool. They also develop actors and the performing aspects, of course, but it’s an amazing company.

Oh, and being a lovely and generous person, Gates gave me a recipe in return. (Even though I was a little sad that she’d seen my recipe before. But there is nothing original, if I thought of this combination of ingredients, so have other people.) Hers was even simpler than mine…

2 bananas (or sweet potato if you don’t like banana)
2 eggs
Mash and mix very well, form into cakes, and fry.

So, if you’re gluten free, or just adventurous, enjoy a recipe from the kitchen of Dr. Crusher, no replicator required. Oh, and she even signed by Labyrinth DVD – she was the choreographer and one of the Chilly Willies. That’s so cool.

If you’re ever in the LA area – go check out her theater. I think you’ll be glad you did.
