Why Aren’t YOU Watching The Middleman

Posted by reudaly on July 23, 2008 in What I'm Reading |

In the past year, my husband and I have finally rejoined the vast majority which has cable/satellite *and* computers. Having Cable/Satellite has enabled us to watch programming we never before thought we could or would — and if you have the desire, you can watch many of the same programs on the internet. Why is this important????? Glad you asked.

The Middleman on ABC Family Channel. That’s why.

For those of you who love comic book action and brilliant, just-skirting-the-edge of Over The Top Cheesy, remember and appreciate shows like the 1966/Adam West Batman or live-action The Tick, you NEED to be watching this show.

If you’re too young to remember, or are too sophisticated, go watch it anyway. It takes itself seriously as an almost over the top cheesy show without going into “stupid” mode. It’s smart in it’s clownishness. Where else can you get a former Navy SEAL who won’t cuss because it cheapens the language? There’s even a Sassy Girl that you don’t want to run over with her MiddleMobile. And don’t get me started on the wondrousness that are the scene markers and subtitles.

This is a show I wish I could write. The type of show I drool to write. Because the ability to do this type of show well takes more skill and dedication than anything else on TV. Seriously, I’m horribly jealous of the writing talent on this show.

Many of you have heard me refer to “Writer’s Crack” — Jackie Chan Adventures had it in spades. It’s the “we locked the writers in a room with all the caffeine, sugar, pizza and preservatives they could handle, no sleep, and told them they couldn’t come out for 3 days” stuff. The Middleman is another FINE example of Writer’s Crack in play.

Right now, terms like “cancellation” are being tossed about. This can’t happen. They are committed to 12 episodes this season. ABC Family seems committed to showing all 12 episode. Ratings are inching upward. Unlike Firefly (or any other Joss Whedon or Tim Minnear show on FOX), this one has a chance of surviving. But only if we get the word out.

I’m asking YOU every single one of you out there, go online, watch the first 4 or 5 episodes that are up. Watch ABC Family on Monday Nights 10 p Eastern/9 p Central. Set your DVRS, VCRS, and TiVOs. Get behind something different, something fun, something NOT about teenagers getting pregnant, or high school tomfoolery, or mind-numbing “reality” shows. This is as fun and “unreal” as it gets.

Just for a taste… the first episodes feature Gorillas and Godfathers… Go… See for yourself.
