“Writers Need Not Apply” More Emmy Insults

Posted by reudaly on August 30, 2009 in Writing |

Doris Egan, writer/producer of House , posted this on her blog.

1) Only a producer should receive an award for “Best Series.”
2) Only a producer who spends a greater portion of their time producing other people’s episodes than writing their own should receive an award for “Best Series.”

Directing producers, in. Line producers, in. Writing producers… well, the Academy’s letter reads:

“A priority of the Acadmy is preserving the value of the Emmy Award thus insuring that those who are most deserving and actively involved are the ones honored with nomination.”

That would not include writers, apparently. Though it would include people who do the scheduling and handle the budgets, and it would include producer-directors.

Yes, writers are the stray dogs of the entertainment world, the corporate world, and of the world in general. We are kicked, abused, left out in the rain. Because according to so very many people, Writing isn’t WORK. Anybody can write. Sure… whatever. TRY IT.

Writers have been conditioned to be be grateful for any job that will pay them to do what they love. But we all have a breaking point. This is one of them. Being a content writer as a day job, I said “heck no” to freelance for less than Indonesian Sweat Shop rates.

Writers have taken it long enough. We’re not taking it anymore.
