Story

Roxana tied the belt of her kimono and picked up the novel on the beside table. She headed to her living room to curl up on her sofa an relax. It was, after all, the first night off from the club in weeks.

Before she could settle in, her phone chirped a text. “What?” The word came out somewhere between a mutter and a growl.

Get dressed. Something dark and comfortable. Meet me outside in 5. It’s important. Bring cash.

The text was from her best friend, Eliza, and fellow singer/dancer at the club. They rarely had the same night off. There was something about the text that was profoundly off. It spurred Roxana to action.

She was on the curb when Eliza’s custom Caprice Classic purred up. “Get in. We don’t have much time.”

“Time for what?” Roxana barely had time to slam the door before Eliza peeled off. Roxana clawed at the seat belt.

“To stop him before he can hypnotize the whole city into being his local army.”

He who? What are you talking about?”

“Voss. He’s making his move to oppress the city and turn everyone into his ideological army.”

And that’s when I knew I’d become, unwittingly, the sidekick in my best friend’s insurrection. I should’ve taken that extra shift. Too late now. I was in it. Only time would tell if I was on the right side of the crusade.
