[Life] Vacation, Ren Festival, and Comfort Food

Posted by reudaly on November 8, 2010 in Life |

This is going to be more of a random life post today, because I need to have one while I’m also enjoying the wondrous Taco Soup one of my co-workers brought in to share for lunch. Today is a “comfort food” kind of day.

This past weekend was glorious. We took a three day weekend and went on “vacation” to the Texas Renaissance Festival down near Houston. Friday was a travel day with stops at our favorite sushi buffet and a visit to Fantasy Art Gallery. Jimmy’s known Tim Corbett for decades. We also paused to see Megamind at a 1:30 showing on a Friday afternoon. It felt decadent. 😎 Then we met up with some of Jimmy’s extended family for the evening.

Saturday and Sunday morning were Ren Fest days. Saturday. Was. Packed. And we did what we’re generally not able to do at Scarborough when we’re working – we saw friends, we talked to people, shopped, and saw some shows. We had fun seeing Gary Willamson back in the Guest Artist Booth. The weather was PERFECT if a little cold on Saturday night (I ended up borrowing a hat and coat from Ruth Thompson – an artist we went to see). We ended up getting me some new things for the next Scarborough season, several Christmas presents, and some stuff to encourage me to write more. I was amazed to see how many people I knew – both as vendors and patrons. Apparently Scarborough is invading NEXT weekend, but this was still cool.

Sunday marred only by the news when traveling home. Michael Batts, a young man I’ve known his entire 17 years on this planet, was in a massive car accident. He’s still critical. We’re stalking the internet all day for updates. But that’s the wonder of technology. I learned of it within the hour of it happening from a friend IN AFRICA who was Skyping with Michael’s brother at the time. The friend in Africa was posting on Facebook, and I was reading it on my iPhone on the interstate between Conroe, TX and Arlington. If you’re a praying type – pray for the Batts’ family, the doctors and Nurses, and all of Michael’s friends. At 17 you’re bulletproof – until you’re not.

Now, I’m running distracted, but with a more relaxed frame of mind (thanks to the weekend of non-thinking fun). I may be sporadically productive this week, but I will be productive.
